On The Stump in Brighouse - The fight against Cartimandua.

This is the first in a series of Political Speeches to be given by Paul Rogan in Calder Valley. As UKIP’s PPC, each of the speeches will focus on a different aspect of UKIP’s policy. It is expected that ‘doing the rounds’ of the various market towns and villages in the constituency and addressing a different aspect of policy each week will take up to a good 90 days of the campaign.

“Calder Valley is a diverse and unique Constituency. Embracing Todmorden and Brighouse from West to East, girthed from Rastrick to Hipperholme and Lightcliffe. Named after the river Calder which flows through Hebden Bridge, Luddendenfoot and down to Elland; our Constituency includes Greetland, Stainland and Ripponden and then the moors. Calder Valley is truly a magnificent part of Yorkshire.

Today, I am in Brighouse, named after the Celtic tribe of the Brigantes. Brigant means dwellers of the high lands. The Brigantes were the largest collection of Pennine Peoples or Tribe in pre-Roman Britain. Their loyalties shifted continually. Firstly they gave refuge to Caratacus, a fierce British resistance fighter against Roman Empire domination. Then, sadly they handed him over to the Authorities for execution; an action which caused a civil war between pro and anti factions. The pro Britain faction was led by the King; the Pro Roman by the Queen, Cartimandua, who might be called the first Pro–EU leader in Brighouse! In the 1st Century AD she won and Roman domination was consolidated; let’s hope that 2,000 years later Nick Clegg’s Pro-EU vision doesn’t win the day.

But let’s move onto another of Brighouse’s well known traditions; that of being an independent and free thinking people. In the past the town has been represented at Westminster by Conservative, then by Labour for a number of years, and presently Conservative again. I appeal to voters in Brighouse and Rastrick today to shrug off the instinct to support an old fashioned allegiance or along party lines of one colour or another and to vote positively for the policies you actually want.

It is quite wrong to say, ‘if you vote UKIP you’ll get Milliband’. In today’s world, if you vote Milliband, it looks like you will get Alex Salmond. And we all know what he wants; a Broken Nation not a United Kingdom. Voters should vote for what they want.
If you want a referendum on the EU, vote UKIP. If you feel immigration is too high and must be addressed, vote UKIP. If you are not overly concerned about these two matters, UKIP is probably not the Party for you.

But please consider this too. UKIP is not just about wanting the People to decide on EU membership by a referendum which means having proper control again over our borders, our security and who should receive our benefits; it’s more, much more.
It’s about taking power away from the Westminster elite and bringing democracy back to the man and woman in the street. The People’s Army is against cronyism, corruption and elitist politicians and that is another reason to support what UKIP is fighting for; a fairer and more democratic Britain.…..

All we ask is a ‘small step’ from the individual by putting a small cross on a ballot paper for UKIP; this will help make the ‘giant leap’ for Great Britain which our Country needs. It is essential to bring some realism into our political system; the time is well overdue for this to happen.

Believe and it could happen, vote UKIP and it will happen!!!”

New Year’s letter, UKIP Calder Valley.

So, the three main Party leaders have produced their New Year’s speeches. All seeking to address the problems and concerns which we, the lesser mortals who they need to vote for them in May, are seeking to have solved.

Unfairness, falling living standards, infrastructures strained to breaking point perhaps due to uncontrolled immigration. Schools over subscribed, roads un-repaired and jammed, governments both local and Westminster distanced and un representative. Both the national and personal debt mounting and un fettered advertising telling us to buy cake today but the quality of the cake is poor and how do we afford it; how will our children ever afford it? Property prices soaring so only the very wealthy can afford them. The National Health Service, treasured, un affordable, an ‘International Service’ rather than ours. Politicians in it for themselves and not for the people they serve. Serve?

The Blue Tories say, stick with us and steer clear of the inevitable disaster of the Big Red Wolf.

The Red’s say, trust us and we will pile high every kitchen table with untold delights (all free of costs?), except perhaps the price the English will have to pay for support from Alex Salmond’s, even redder, Scottish Independents.

The Yellows tell us to put on our ‘wellies’ so we can wade through the mud and slush of the trenches which the ‘Big Two’ will dig in the vicious war of attrition to win our votes.

Of course, these aloof and detached political Generals only announce a ‘big push’ every five years. In between times, they seem to rub along nicely together in the Palace of Westminster’s chamber, lobbies, restaurants and bars. Nice work with good pensions if you can get it.

Now, there is another alternative. UKIP, the clear victors of last years Europe elections.
Amateurs, not brought up in the political classes of privilege, not PC, not prepared to duck questions, unskilled in the art of flannel. Ideals born by being just ‘one of the people’, like all the rest of us. Not on the right, or the left, not fixed in the centre of anything. Like us all, pendulums which swing one way or another, depending on the problem and the facts. Not locked in by dogma, not drawn into a gang of T-shirt colours of blue, red or yellow.

UKIP, hoping to find ways to make things better for us all, not fearing to make a few mistakes and admit to them. UKIP, making a difference; only possible with a few more votes.

As HM The Queen recommended during the Scotland Independence vote, please think carefully about your vote. My own view is, if you are content with the same as we have always had, vote (or don’t vote) as you always have done. However, if you want change, the only way to get something different is to vote someone different, vote for the only new kid on the block.
