Energy & Fracking
Greenpeace are asking PPCs this election 2 questions. These were my responses.
Question 1.
Q. ‘Our constituency has been
earmarked for fracking. Do you support fracking in Calder Valley Constituency,
yes or no?' (fracking is theoretically possible
in the constituency)
A. I am very uncomfortable that our energy supplies are in the
hands of despots and undemocratic Counties who do not respect human rights and
use their energy reserves to blackmail others, fight wars and sustain their own
personality power bases.
We are dangerously over dependent on imported energy and much of
the energy we do make is massively subsidised. Both of these issues concern me
greatly. I would only support fracking in Calder Valley if it was commercially
viable.
Question 2.
Q. The UK is
legally bound by the Climate Change Act to reduce our emissions by at least 80%
by 2050, what priorities do you think the UK needs to make to ensure we reach
this target?’
A. The UK government must inform each individual that energy
reduction starts at the very lowest level. Each individual, their families,
workplaces, schools, hospitals, town halls and everywhere we live work or go,
everything we buy, eat or use, everywhere we go, how we travel, how far we
travel, all these things can make a massive contribution to the overall energy
we consume. This is a changing of minds and lifestyles and will be a very
difficult task, however it is a job for Government to lead in this way.
